First off I apologise if I sound like a complete noob here but i'm getting really confused with the sat nav and nokia maps.
I'm on a vodafone contract and they threw in a 1 year subscription to the voice guided software, but what I want to know is do you have to connect to wap or a data service everytime to use the sat nav software? because i'm sure the data charges will be sky high on my contract.
I'm being quite cautious because I don't want to have charges.
If anyone can help or give me advice that would be great and it's appreciated. As well is the tom tom software for the N95 worth looking into?
Sorry if i'm being completely dumb!

Thanks in advance

I'd Assume that if they gave you this software, they must have given you free (or at least reduced) data plan. Try ringing up your service provider and seeing what the rates are. Once you have the rates, we can continue to help you get online to use it!

As standard the Nokia MAPS application WILL use a GPRS (data) connection but you can stop it from the phone menu - you have to be aware why it does it first though and make alternative arrangements to get the data on your phone prior to using it.

The N95 doesn't have the storage space to keep every map for every world region so it only uses the one(s) that you need, if you are using it in the UK for example then it will only use the UK / Europe map... To do this it needs to download it from the internet - and this is where the GPRS usage comes in. But you can disable MAPS from using GPRS and instead use some PC software from Nokia called "MapLoader" - once installed on your PC you just connect your phone and select which map(s) you want to download.

Then we have A-GPS which is Assisted GPS - offered on later N95's it uses a GPRS connection to download a very small amount of data when MAPS starts-up to get sat positions. I very much doubt that your service provider will bother to charge you for such a small amount of data but just keep an eye on it...

In my opinion anyone who has a net dependant device like the N95 should have a data plan - sure you can get around most GPRS things but at the end of the day the phone will function much better if it can connect to the internet via GPRS when it needs to.

As for TomTom - yes it does work on the N95 & N95 8Gb but only with an external bluetooth GPS reciever at present, TomTom are supposed to be releasing and update to allow the use of the N95's internal GPS hardware but they have been saying that for ages!  Grin

Thanks for the replies, the last thing I want is £10 or more in data charges. Vodafone have been somewhat dodgy in the past with odd charges that they couldn't explain, I really want to use the software but i'm a little bit more re assured now.
Tony would you recommend to turn both the GPRS and A-GPS on?

I wouldn't worry to much about the A-GPS but if you don't want a data bill then turn the GPRS off and use MapLoader to get your maps onto your N95...
