The 5 Mpixels are Severly compressed into a USELESS 640 Kbytes or so.

This makes the pictures look worse than my old 2 Mpixel Sony.

AND YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE COMPRESSION settings!

I get a lot of Artifacting.

3.2MP on the Sony Erricson K800i is still the best camera phone available.
I don't understand why anyone would release a 5MP camera that is not functioning at 5MP.

Although the compression technique used by nokia is somewhat not best pleasing, the bottom line is if you want to take 5mp photos, one must expect a dramatic increase in memory occupation.

This being said, having an 8gb sd micro, I cannot say memory problems have been to severe, and If i need to take photos, I keep them on there, transfer them to my computer when possible, then remove them from the phone. Is this method so horrible?

If you are that bothered about the compression, try the DNG Phone Camera application to save digital negatives (aka RAW files).

I tried the utility guys.
Here is the facts:
The standard n95 8gb Carl Zeiss camera has 5megapixels. Because it compresses the picture taken, we have the unfortunate result of 2500x2000 pixels resolution and only 650kb .jpg file. This instantly means that the camera has compressed the picture to a minimum decent result.
On the other hand, the DNG utility creates .raw files. This should be considered something like the film n the old cameras. It is a file that has to be processed before used, just like a film should have been developed before made to a real paper picture.
This specific utility though has the following big disandvantages. It is slow to start with. It takes double or more time than the nokia camera to take a picture. Then, when it is done, the file is in .dng format and its size is 1-1.5 mb. The worst thing is that the resolution is 640x320 pixels. And even worse, you cant chose a different one since the utility comes as is with no options.
I have taken 2 pictures with the 2 different ways. The results are in both cases disappointing. I have contacted the guy already and i am waiting for his reply to my several questions.
I will keep you posted Smiley

Update.
Here is my correspondance with the creator of the application, starting with my email to him:

Hello.
I just tried out your DNG software on my nokia n95 8gb phone. To start with, it is a great tool and thank you for going into it.But, i am a little confused on its results. While using the nokia camera, I am taking pictures that are 2500x2000 pixels resolution and a jpg file size of 650kb (which i understand it is due to nokia compression, unacce[table in my opinion) but when i used your utility it gave me a raw (dng) picture of 640x320 resolution and file size of 1,5mb.Although it looks like yours is more detailed, i am wondering why it doesnt take advantage of the whole 5 megapixels of the nokia camera. I mean, 640x320 pixels ist exactly a satisfactory resolution for such a camera and i understand that it is not your fault ofcourse, but i am wondering why cant it go higher to 2500x2000 pixels. In any case your work is very much appreciated.
Thank you again,Nik

And this is his answer:
Hi Nik! Thanks for your email. You are correct in your observations.
The explaination is simple, the phone does not have enough memory and CPU power to handle / process the full 5MP in RAW format.

So there you have it. Pictures taken either with the normal camera application or with the DNG application, will still be crappy Smiley

I bought a HP digital Camera last June. It comes with a one year warranty. At Xmas the lens became stuck in the out position. Obviously it needs to be sent in for repair. I searched through HP's website and with great difficulty found a link for technical support. I troubleshot the camera with this person.
