I was really excited to get the 5 Mpixel camera with the N95, and it takes pretty good pictures, except that the compression is REALLY SEVERE
It takes the 5 Mpixel (RGB = 15 Mbyte uncompressed) and crushes the quality into a crummy 640 Kbytes.
AWFUL. What a screw-up!

Yes, I was hoping not to have to carry my Casio 7mp camera around any more, but no. The N95 camera is let down by crap software...

My thoughts exactly - my old, 3MP Nikon 995 takes much better pictures. I wish there was a "save raw image" option, and an option to manually set compression-quality much higher than the current limit.

Yes, it's really stupid. They had a great chance here and blew it.
In the 6+ months I've owned the n95, I have only taken arounf ten pictures.
I still carry my excellent Casi 7mp camera around, and with it I've taken at least 400 pix in the same period...

I just feel like a guy that's been promised a 5 MP camera, only to find out it's been left out! ( The current 5 MP is USELESS as far as I am concerned. I'll just keep carrying my 7 MP Casio Exilim around for now )

The largest I've ever gotten is just over 1 Mbyte.
Even at your 1.5 MB, that's still 10:1 compression. Do you have the newer N95?

Heres the low-down. If you have the v2.0 firmware, rumor has it that they fiddled with the software for the fone to "Slightly" change the 5Mp camera to make the new nokia with something like a 6 or 7 mp camera in it look so much better. I have noticed the change for pre v2.0 to after and i must say i am slightly disappointed with that. But at the end of the day you know what? ITS A PHONE! and to be able to have a phone in your pocket that takes great photos at times that you wouldn't have a good camera on you but needed one, is pretty good in my book. I'm still "Happy" with the shots it takes. You can still print them and have them look a decent quality but i at nokia for dumming down our fones so they can make more cash on their next project. I just wish they gave the option to put the old firmware back on to the phone.

Surely A new camera application could be installed? Symbian should lend itself to that nicely

Hi, just logged onto this site. Have recently become a proud owner of a Nokia N95 RGB and was really pleased with it until I read the piece about the compression with the camera. I paid £70 when I upgraded after a long wait to get this phone and one of the main reasons I got it was because of the camera and so am not too pleased about this. The phone has V20.0.016, has the firmware been updated to put this right? If it has I will need to take to a shop get the firmware updated as my computer hasn't got enough ram. What is the laterst firmware and how much will have to pay for this and what else would I get - is it worth doing? Thank you.

i found a program for the symbian freaks website that allowed you to save your image files in RAW format, i didn't play with it much cause i didn't really understand the implications of it then. i'll see if i can find it again and try and post some pics to see the difference. i'm not sure if the compression is firmware or software based but hopefully there's someway of getting some better quality pcitures form the N95. its a fantastic phone and a shame that this is its one little drawback..
